A Start at Hopkins

Billings administration building

My first day at Johns Hopkins began at the intersection of Wolfe Street. Shuttles came and went in quick succession; each stamped with a huge Johns Hopkins label — a constant reminder that I was no longer in Melbourne. Just a few weeks ago, all I had was an email offer and a mind swirling with questions about moving halfway around the world. As an international scholar, uncertainty felt like a constant companion, until the warmth of pizza from the cafeteria soothed my nerves.

What struck me first was hospital security. Every metallic object had to be inspected, not just politely but thoroughly. Beyond that checkpoint, the environment transformed into a network of looping walkways and glass atriums — each passageway reminding me of blood vessels connecting vital organs. My destination was the Wilmer Eye Institute. On my way, I noticed a modest banner celebrating its centennial anniversary. To the newcomer’s eye, Wilmer’s entrance looked unassuming: a simple wall lined with historic photos and a pair of well-worn, creaky elevators. In contrast to the age of the building, the people I met — colleagues, mentors, staff — were filled with energy. Here, I realized that’s probably most important. I was now among the peers and mentors who share my vision and interests. I knew (kind of) what I was working for, and would try my best.

As I stand by the window of Wilmer, gazing outside, I catch a reflection of myself — curious, perhaps a little uncertain, shaped by a long and winding journey. The future seems both challenging and full of possibilities. Yet, in this moment, what matters most isn’t the questions or ambitions, but something simple: the smell of a fried chicken sando from the purple food truck below. That first bite became my favorite welcome, a perfect end to a memorable day and, perhaps, the beginning of something.
